“Most homeowners only renovate once or twice in their lifetime. Yet the decisions they make in those few months affect how they live every day for the next twenty years.” – Luke Counter
– I’ve been designing kitchens since I was 18. Started as an apprentice in Manchester, worked through redundancy, a back injury, and eventually opened Counter Interiors in York in 2013.
Since then, Becky and I have helped over 500 homeowners create kitchens they genuinely love living in.
After designing hundreds of them, you start noticing patterns – the mistakes people make before they even walk into a showroom, the design decisions that still look great twenty years later, and where additional investment genuinely transforms a project.
Here’s what more than 20 years has taught me.

The One Thing Most Kitchen Designers Won’t Tell You
It’s not just how much you spend on your kitchen.
It’s where you spend it that makes the difference.
Have you ever looked at two kitchen designs that seem remarkably similar, only to find there’s £10,000, £15,000 or more between the quotations?
Both might have an island. Both might have stone worktops. Both might have built-in appliances.
So what are you actually getting for spending more?
A more expensive kitchen shouldn’t just look more expensive. It should work better too.
What You Don’t See in the Render
Two kitchens can look almost identical from the outside while being very different underneath.
Cabinet construction and specification, drawer systems, hinges, usable internal storage, drawer load capacity, internal finishing, lighting integration, service planning, installation quality and aftercare all affect how the kitchen feels and performs every day.
You open and close drawers twenty times a day. Over twenty years, that’s over 140,000 times.
Premium soft-close mechanisms with proper dampening? Worth every penny. You’ll notice the difference every single time you use them.
Internal drawer organisation that actually keeps things tidy versus drawers that become a jumbled mess within a week? That’s not a luxury upgrade. That’s the difference between a kitchen that works and one that frustrates you daily.
The question shouldn’t simply be: “How much does this kitchen cost?”
A better question is: “What am I actually getting for my investment?”
What Separates Good Kitchen Design From Great Design
– “I’ve seen kitchens that look brilliant in renders but make their owners’ lives harder every single day.”
– “The problem comes when aesthetics are considered without giving equal thought to workflow and everyday use.”

Example 1: The Visually Perfect Island
That stunning symmetrical island with perfectly balanced proportions?
Brilliant until you realise the bin is at the wrong end for food prep, the dishwasher opens into the main walkway, and there’s nowhere to actually put things down when you’re unloading shopping or plating up.
Suddenly that beautiful design becomes an obstacle course you navigate multiple times a day.

Example 2: Standard Solutions That Don’t Fit
Storage should be designed around the person using it, rather than simply specified because it is the standard solution. pan drawers under the hob that everyone specifies?
Deep pan drawers under the hob might be perfect for someone who’s 6’2″ but frustrating for someone who’s 5’3″ and can’t see what’s at the back without crouching down.
The workflow looks perfect on paper. In practice, the person using it daily needs something different.
Here’s what actually separates good design from great design:
- Honest understanding of how you’ll genuinely use the space.
- If you bake every weekend, put your stand mixer somewhere you can leave it out without it looking messy.
- If you’re 5’3″, don’t put your everyday glasses on the top shelf just because it looks symmetrical.
- If you cook with kids underfoot, create zones where they can help without being in the way of hot pans.
Great design doesn’t just look beautiful. It genuinely works.
Where Investing More in Appliances Makes a Difference
The right appliance upgrades can completely change how you cook and use your kitchen. The key is choosing features that genuinely suit the way you live.
Some appliance upgrades genuinely transform how you cook and use your kitchen. After specifying NEFF appliances across hundreds of projects as a NEFF MasterPartner, I’ve seen which technologies customers continue to appreciate years after installation.
The right question isn’t simply ‘Do I need the more expensive appliance?’ It’s ‘Will this feature genuinely improve the way I use my kitchen?’
Worth it:
NEFF Slide & Hide ovens
The door slides underneath instead of dropping down, which means you can get right up close to check on food, baste a roast, or slide something in without reaching over a scorching hot door.
Use it once and you’ll wonder why anyone still makes ovens the old way.

NEFF induction hobs with FlexInduction zones
This is the upgrade I recommend most often – and the one clients thank me for years later.
Not basic induction, but NEFF’s FlexInduction zones that you can bridge to fit any pan size.
Complete flexibility rather than being locked into fixed ring positions you’re constantly trying to work around.
What Makes Some Kitchens Still Look Perfect Twenty Years Later?
– “I’ve been back to kitchens we installed 10, 15, even 20 years ago.”
– “Some still look fantastic. Some look tired. Some the owners still love. Some they’re desperate to replace.”
– “The difference isn’t the budget. I’ve seen £25,000 kitchens that still feel perfect and £60,000 kitchens the owners are already planning to rip out.”

The kitchens that last are the ones where:
We designed around how they actually cook. Not how they think they should cook.
The client who admitted they never bake, so we didn’t waste money on a fancy proving drawer and double oven setup.
The family who cook together, so we created two distinct work zones.
We chose materials appropriate to the way the household actually lives.
Understanding how materials will wear, how much maintenance they need and how they will age over time.
Materials that suit the household rather than materials chosen purely for aesthetics.
We built in enough closed storage.
Those stunning all-open-shelving kitchens in magazines? They require daily styling. Most people don’t want to live like that.
We were honest about what would work
Even when it meant challenging an initial idea and recommending a different solution that will work better long term.
We prioritised quality where it matters.
Premium soft-close mechanisms that you’ll use 20 times a day for 20 years? Worth it.
Statement details and specialist cabinetry can absolutely be worth investing in when they enhance the overall design rather than simply being added for effect.

– “What I Wish Every Homeowner Knew Before They Started.”
You’ll make hundreds of decisions when designing your kitchen.
Some matter enormously. Some barely matter at all. The trick is knowing which is which before you spend the money.
Spend time getting the layout right before you think about aesthetics.
Layout determines whether your kitchen works beautifully or frustrates you daily. Door styles are just aesthetics. Get the workflow right first.
Be honest about how you live.
If you don’t cook from scratch every night, don’t design a kitchen for someone who does.
If you genuinely will use that coffee station daily, build it in properly. If you won’t, don’t waste the space.
Understand what you’re actually getting for your investment.
Two quotations might look similar on the surface. The difference is often in the cabinet construction, drawer systems, quality of finishing, and how everything works together.
Ask to see the specification in detail.
Choose a designer who’ll challenge you, not just agree with everything.
The best designers aren’t afraid to say “I don’t think that’ll work as well as you hope” or “There’s a better way to achieve what you’re after.”
You’re not paying for a yes-person. You’re paying for experience.
Remember you’re designing for 20 years, not 20 Instagram likes.
The validation from posting your new kitchen lasts a week. Living with the consequences of your decisions lasts two decades.
